Everywoman Kim
This work raises questions about the status of women in the designer’s home country, South Korea, which has been ranked for 30 years as the OECD country with the largest gender wage gap. Despite the social changes brought by rapid industrialization, economic growth, and women’s entry into the labor market, women have been expected to simultaneously fulfill both domestic and social roles, yet their sacrifices and realities have received little attention. The work takes a documentary approach and engages in archiving, highlighting mothers’ experiences within the family, the basic unit of society. The main character, Mrs. Kim, represents the experience of ordinary citizens and the often overlooked experiences of women in S. Korean society.
